Australian Gold Kookaburra Coins
The Australian Kookaburra Collection is released from the Perth Mint on an annual schedule. While the silver Kookaburra coins are commonly known, gold bullion coins are also offered in the series. The Gold Kookaburra has been produced in both a 1 oz and 1/10th oz weights, with the 1/10th oz weight being the only size released in recent years. The Gold Kookaburra coin is shipped, like some other Perth Mint items, inside individual safety capsules to protect against normal wear and tear.
At the Perth Mint, the Australian Kookaburra Series premiered in 1990. The coins are available in both silver and gold annually. By presenting a different reverse version each year featuring the kookaburra, the largest member of the kingfisher species, the Perth Mint encourages the long-term success of the coins.
A representation of Queen Elizabeth II is still present on the obverse side of Australian Gold Kookaburra Coins. Her Majesty is found here in the sixth-generation Australian portrait for national currency. In this design, the Queen is wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown.
2021 Gold Kookaburra Coin Release
The 2021 1/10 oz Gold Kookaburra is the second-ever one-tenth ounce produced by the Perth Mint. 2021 marks the 32nd year for Australian Kookaburra Series coins and just the second iteration of 1/10th oz Gold Kookaburra coins. The 1/10th oz Gold Kookaburras have a very limited mintage of only 15,000 coins, comparatively much smaller than its 1 oz Perth Mint counterparts such as the Gold Kangaroo which traditionally has a mintage in the hundreds of thousands. In fact, the Gold Kangaroo has a 1/10th oz gold version as well, however that coin has a mintage cap of 200,000 which is over 10x larger than the 1/10th oz Gold Kookaburra coin.
These coins are offered in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and share the new reverse design of the kookaburra from the silver bullion series. The artwork was created by Aleysha Howarth.
Perth Mint
Established in London as a branch of the Royal Mint, the Perth Mint is now wholly owned by the Government of Western Australia and, in partnership with the Royal Australian Mint, is responsible for minting Australia's legal tender coins. It is the last remaining facility that opened as a branch of the Royal Mint in Australia since the other two branches – Sydney and Melbourne Mints shut down operations. While originally set up to manufacture gold sovereigns and half-sovereigns, the Perth Mint is now a well-known manufacturer of gold and silver bullions recognized for manufacturing fine precious metal goods such as coins, bars, and medals today. In fact, the Perth Mint had processed a whopping 4500 tons of gold before the year 2000, which was just over 3 percent of all human-refined gold.
