The Kraken is a legendary gigantic sea monster said to be found in the waters surrounding Norway and Greenland. It was first mentioned in an ancient Icelandic story written in the thirteenth century AD, where two monsters, the Lyngbakr and the Hafgufa, crossed paths with the main characters of the saga who were sailing across the Sea of Greenland. The Hafgufa is said to be connected with the kraken.

The unidentified author of a scientific paper released also in the 13th century defined the behavior of the two creatures after they returned from a journey to Greenland.
