From humble roots, Lincoln rose to ultimately become the United States' 16th President. Before running for political office, Lincoln was largely self-educated and opened his own law practice in Illinois. His career in politics would include eight years as a member of the Whig Party in the Illinois House of Representatives and one term in the House of Representatives of the United States. He was out of office from 1849-1860 but was the first Republican nominee for president in 1860. Lincoln turned the tides of history when he won the 1860 Presidential election. This election victory was the first event of many that led to the start of the Civil War. Lincoln won reelection in 1864 in the midst of the Civil War but was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth just 5 days after the Confederate Army surrendered to the North.

The eagle is clutching the United States’ heraldic shield in its right claw and three arrows in its left claw.
