The 2 oz New Jersey Copper Tribute Silver Rounds from Intaglio Mint are minted using two troy ounces of pure silver bullion. Until 1788, the federal government did not create an official mint, so individual States minted their own coins from 1776-1788. Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Vermont all produced their own forms of formal coinage. These silver rounds are replicas of a coin minted during this era by the state of New Jersey.

Declining amounts of British Half-Pennies, a lack of copper coins, the absence of a US mint under the Articles of Confederation, and the adoption of the US Constitution in 1788 led to the minting of government and private copper coins from 1785 to 1789.

The obverse of these New Jersey Copper Tribute Silver Rounds will have a horse head in the middle of the round with the words “NOVA CAESAREA” which is “New Jersey” in Italian. Below the horse is a plow, with the year 1786 minted to the right of the plow.

The reverse of this silver round features an early rendition of the shield found in the official US seal. The words “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are featured along the outside of the rounds with a star separating each word. The round’s specifications of “2 TROY OUNCES .999 FINE AG” are minted at the bottom of the round. Both sides of this round have a sawtooth design along the rim.
