The 2013 1 oz Perth Mint Year of the Snake Coins are apart of the second Lunar Series from the Perth Mint. The first Gold Lunar Series was produced from 1996-2007, while the Lunar Series II has been minted from 2008 until 2019, ending in 2019 with the Year of the Pig. A surprising fact about the Perth Mint is that it has existed for longer than Australia itself. The Perth Mint was established in 1899 as a subsidiary to the British Royal Mint, while Australia did not gain its independence from Great Britain until 1901. The Chinese Lunar Year Calendar features 12 different animals, meaning that the next Year of the Snake will come in 2025.

The 2013 Year of the Snake gold coins were minted in various weights ranging from 1/20 oz to 1 kilo. Each of these 1 oz gold coins come individually encapsulated and are minted using .9999 gold bullion (also known as 24-karat gold), as all Perth Mint gold products are.

The obverse of these gold coins features a snake coiled up and ready to strike. Chinese symbol for “snake” and the Perth mintmark to its left, with “Year of the Snake” minted below it.

The reverse features the iconic profile image of a young Queen Elizabeth with “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRALIA”, “100 DOLLARS”, “2013”, & “1 OZ 9999 GOLD” minted around the circumference of the coin.
