When struck by sunlight, their backs throw off a silvery gleam -- making it a fitting, majestic animal to form the basis of a silver coin series from the African continent.

The Silverback Gorilla Coin program is the result of a partnership between the African nation of Congo and the USA-based, privately-held Scottsdale Mint. The Mint has, over the past few years, partnered with many other sovereign nations to strike legal tender bullion coinage on their behalf. This partnership has proven extremely attractive to countries that don't have their own government mint.

Each of these coins is struck using 1 troy ounce of 0.999 pure silver. Morever, since they are recognized as legal tender in Congo, they bear face values of 5,000 Francs as well!
