The Crown of Thorns is a powerful image that is still present in modern-day Christianity. It is said that the crown was placed on the head of Jesus during his crucifixion as a way to cause him pain and mock his claimed authority. The thorns have been kept in multiple cathedrals in Paris since 1238, and they even survived the Notre-Dame Cathedral fire of April 2019.

Each Biblical Series coin also comes with its own Certificate of Authenticity and a beautiful mint box in the shape and design of the Bible. The coins are produced by Scottsdale Mint, a private US-based mint. They are deemed silver coins because they are backed by the Niue government. The silver bullion used by Scottsdale Mint has been treated to make it look these coins are old, but in fact are just antiqued.

The obverse of these Biblical Series coins features a young portrait of Queen Elizabeth in her crown. Around her are the words “QUEEN ELIZABETH II”, “2oz 999 FINE SILVER”, “2019”, & “NIUE TWO DOLLARS”.

The reverse features Jesus making his walk where he was carrying the cross. It depicts him wearing a crown of thorns and being surrounded by a group of people, many of them wielding sticks which they used to beat Jesus with.
