This year’s release is the second coin in the Perth Mint’s Platinum Kangaroo line which started in 2018. The platinum kangaroo coin joins the popular gold kangaroos and silver kangaroos in Perth’s current lineup.

The kangaroo featured on this platinum coin is actually a red kangaroo, which is the largest of the species. Red Kangaroo sightings are quite common in Australia and because of this it has become a rather iconic image of Australia. Interestingly, red kangaroos have been known to assemble in large groups when there is a large food source available, and these groups have been known to get as large as 1,500 kangaroos.

This kangaroo coin is minted by the Australian Perth Mint which was originally opened in 1899 due to the discovery of rich gold deposits. Originally the Perth mint was one of three branches in Australia with the Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint, but only the Perth Mint remains open today.

The profile of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of the platinum kangaroo coin surrounded by the words “ELIZABETH II” “AUSTRALIA” “100 DOLLARS” with the letters “JC” found on Her Majesty’s right shoulder, representing the initials of the designer, Jody Clark.

The reverse of the 2019 Platinum Kangaroo features the same side-view of a kangaroo as can be found on the popular silver version of the coin, but this time with a new background. Around the edge of the platinum kangaroo are the words “AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO” ‘2019 1OZ 9995 PLATINUM” along with the “P” mint mark of the Perth Mint.
