The Gold Maple Leaf Coin was first minted in 1979 and for many years the smallest weight the coin could be purchased in was 1/20 of an ounce. Then in 2014 the Royal Canadian Mint released the Gold Maple Leaf Coin in a 1 gram size for the first time.

The Royal Canadian Mint was originally opened in 1908 under the control of the British Royal Mint. It wasn’t until 1931 that the Canadian Mint negotiated its independence.
