While the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin was first minted in 1979, the 1/4 oz version of the coin wasn’t introduced until three years later in 1982. The new fractional sizes sizes of the Gold Maple Leafs were so popular in fact, that it led the mint to introduce more sizes in the years after.

The effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has only changed twice in the history of the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf. The current representation found on the 2020 coin was first used in 2005 and shows the Queen at 79 years of age.

The Canadian Royal Mint’s history traces back to 1908 when the first mint was opened in Canada. However, this early mint was actually a branch of the British Royal Mint. It wasn’t until 1931 that ownership of the mint was transferred to the Canadian Government.
