The Perth Mint, established in 1899, was initially one of the three branches based in Australia of the British Royal Mint. Ownership of the mint was not passed to the Western Australian government until 1970, and today the Perth Mint is the only of the original three divisions that is still an operational mint.

The obverse of this Gold Kangaroo Coin features the Queen Elizabeth II side profile illustrated by Jody Clark. The "JC" initials of the artist can be seen on the shoulder of Her Majesty. The words "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA" are inscribed above the queen and the monetary denomination of "15 DOLLARS" is below the profile.

The 2021 Gold Kangaroo displays an adult kangaroo up close in the Australian wilderness with two Waratah flowers behind the marsupial. Surrounding the image on the coin’s reverse are the words “AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO” along with “2021 1oz 9999 GOLD”. The “P” mint mark of the Perth Mint can also be seen on this face of the coin
