The Coin’s Design

The Centenario of Mexican Independence from Spain is the motif engraved on the coins.

The obverse showcases the current National Seal encompassed by the words: “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” as a sign of pride and patriotism.

The reverse depicts the Angel of Independence or the Winged Victory on the forefront and two volcanos, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, in the background. The inscriptions on this side are: “½ ONZA ORO PURO,” “LEY .999”, which means ½ troy ounce .999 pure gold, and the year of issuance.

The Reverse Proof Coins

The reverse proof coin’s release only happened in 2018, 14 years after the Mexican Mint introduced the regular Libertad proof coins to the bullion market. In that year, the Mint stroke a short number of 1 thousand coins and kept producing these unique coins in annual limited editions.
