The Coin’s Design

Gold Libertads celebrate the Independence of Mexico, and the symbols used in the coin’s design reflect the nation’s pride.

The obverse depicts the current emblem of the Mexican Coat of Arms. The only inscription engraved on this side is “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.”

The reverse features the Roman Goddess of Victory like an angel named the Winged Victory. This feminine figure became a statue in Mexico City, atop a monument called Mexican Independence Victory Column. On this side, the inscriptions are: “1 ONZA ORO PURO”, “LEY .999”, and the year of mintage. They mean the coin’s weight, metal content, and purity.

The Coin’s Variations

The Mexican Mint offers Gold Libertad coins in several sizes of coins and finishes in a vast catalog of options. Silver and gold coins are available in fractional sizes of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, ½ oz, and the traditional 1 oz coin. Heavier coins like the 2 oz and the 5 oz are also available for the silver version.
