The Design

The obverse depicts the Coat of Arms of Mexico. The eagle devouring the rattlesnake is a symbolic image of the country defeating the long-term Spanish domination. The words around it are: “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.”

The reverse displays the Winged Victory on top of the Independence Monument in Mexico City. In the background, the two volcanos that represent Mexican folk complete the scene. The inscriptions surrounding the image are: “1/20 ONZA ORO PURO” and “LEY .999”, indicating weight, metal content, and purity. 

The Proof Finish

The Mexican Mint started striking proof coins in 1983, but as this finish demands more from the company, the strikes are limited to a few pieces. The proof finish brings the contrast between the image imprinted in relief and the coin’s background, which receives a mirror-like luster.

The NGC PR-70 grade

The NGC-Numismatic Guaranty Company is a globally recognized service for evaluating and grading coins based on their authenticity and condition. According to the Sheldon grading scale, PR-70 indicates that a particular proof coin has no visible imperfections, deserving the highest-70 grade.
