The Design

The new obverse depicts King Charles III in a Martin Jennings portrait for the first time. His Majesty had his left-profile bust elegantly designed, unlike the Queen’s effigy, which used to be of her right-profile. Around the image, besides His name, “CHARLES,” and the face value of “10 POUNDS,” the letters “D. G. REX. F. D” stand for “By the grace of God, King” in Latin.

The reverse design is a creation of Philip Nathan, specially made for the series. Britannia, who represents the nation through a feminine character, has an air of a protector as she carries the Union Jack Shield and trident facing the wind. The information engraved on the outer rim read: “BRITANNIA,” “2023”, “1/10 oz,” “999.9,” and “FINE GOLD,” referring to issuance, weight, purity, and metal content.

Security Features

Since the 2021 edition, Britannia coins have new security features on their reverse side. The background image has a texture motion making waves move as you change the angle of view. It also happens with the trident in focus on the lower left, which turns into a padlock as you move the coin. The Union Jack Shield has tincture lines highlighting the national flag, and micro-text engravings surrounding Britannia’s depiction complete the security features.
