The Design

The obverse features Jody Clark’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The design dates back to 2015 and depicts an 89-year-old Queen wearing the magnific George IV State Diadem Crown. The words which encircle the bust are: “25 POUNDS,” “ELIZABETH II,” and “D. G. REG. F. D,” standing for “By the grace of God, Queen” in Latin.

The heraldic beast portrayed on the reverse is a Yale, a mythic creature and a symbol of defense. Henry VIII chose it to support the Arms of his new wife, Jane Seymour. Engraved on the outer rim read “YALE OF BEAUFORT,” “¼ oz,” “FINE GOLD,” “999.9,” and the year of mintage.

The Tudor Series

2023 marks the second year of the Royal Mint release of the Tudor Series. The Tudor Dynasty started following the tradition of an agreed marriage between the Lancaster and York families, which disputed the throne. Henri VII was the first Tudor, and his son succeeded him on the throne. To celebrate, the British Crown had ten stone sculptures of monsters and legendary creatures built around the Hampton Court Palace.

The sculptures line the Palace’s Moat bridge and have inspired this coin collection. They consist of: The Seymour Panther, The Lion of England, the Bull of Clarence, the Tudor Dragon, the Greyhound of Richmond, the Royal Dragon, the Yale of Beaufort, the Seymour Unicorn, the Queen's Panther, and the Queen’s Lion.
