2023 1 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin

The Austrian Mint presents the 2023 edition of its Gold Philharmonic Series, one of the most classic gold coins in the bullion market.

Elegantly designed, the series honors the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. And besides the stunning design, the high levels of metal content make each coin a valuable input to those who enjoy adding physical bullion to their investment portfolios.

Each of these Austrian Gold Philharmonic contains 1 oz of 99.99% pure gold, legal tender status within Austria, and a face value of 100 Euros, fully guaranteed by the Austrian government.

Coin Highlights

  • Contains 1 oz of .9999 fine gold in BU condition;
  • Face value of 100 Euros backed by the Austrian government;
  • 35th issue of the Philharmonic Series;
  • The obverse features the pipe organ;
  • The reverse displays some classic instruments that compose the orchestra.

The Design

The motif chosen to stamp the series is the Vienna Philarmonic Orchestra. Chief Engraver Thomas Pesendorfer is the one who signs the design.

The obverse features the pipe organ located in the Musikverein, Vienna's Golden Hall of Music. The organ depicted substituted the original one, built-in 1872 but destroyed during the war.

The image's inscriptions refer to the coin’s origin, weight, metal content, purity, year of issuance, and face value. The language used to describe that information is German, the nation’s official language.

The reverse displays some classical instruments that compose the Vienna Orchestra. The ones depicted are violins, a cello, the Viennese horn, a bassoon, and a harp. The name of the Orchestra is the only inscription on this side.

The Gold Philharmonic Series

The first Philharmonic introduced in the bullion market was the Gold 1 oz coin. The premiere happened in 1989, and months after the strike of the debuting coin, the Austrian Mint produced the fractional ¼ oz gold coin.

The series expanded fast by including other fractional sizes in the production line. 1991 brought the 1/10 oz gold coin; in 1994, the ½ oz. The last golden coin was the 1/25 oz, including in 2014 for the 25th anniversary of the series.
