The Design

The obverse showcases a frontal view of the Stanley Hotel. Its founder, Freelan Oscar Stanley, stands on the bottom stairs, and two girls are on top, at the front door. These girls are the famous twins, disturbing characters of Stephen King’s “The Shining.”

The inscription on this side refers to the year of mintage “2023”, the coin’s name: “THE STANLEY,” and the series “MOST HAUNTED PLACES.”

The Stanley hotel served as an inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's 1977 bestseller, The Shining. The author reports he was staying in the hotel in 1974, precisely in room 217, when he had lively nightmares, and supernatural horror experiences, which inspired him to write the book.

The reverse showcases a wall of pictures. The central image is a cameo depicting Mr. Stanley’s bust; on its right is Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait.

The coin’s face value of “10 DOLLARS” arches over the pictures, while the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II” and “COOK ISLANDS” are on the bottom.

The black proof finish applied to the surfaces darkens the images, emphasizing the idea of obscurity, darkness, and mystery.
