Part of the 4th release under the famed American Silver Eagle program, these 1989-S American Silver Eagle Proof Coins are assigned PR-70 Deep Cameo grades by PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service). A 70 on the Sheldon Scale is the highest possible grade for a coin – indicating physical perfection so sublime that even magnification does not uncover any flaws.

PCGS, or the Professional Coin Grading Service, was founded in 1985, with the sole aim of providing reliable standards for different qualities and conditions of coins. It is now one of the leading authorities on coin grading; PCGS has made a name for itself with over three decades of accurate certification and authentication of coins more than $29 billion in value.

Each of these coins is struck using 0.999 pure silver, weighing exactly 1 troy ounce. The United States Government backs these specifications by assigning a $1 face value to them.

The coin’s reverse displays John Mercanti’s brilliant portrayal of the Heraldic Eagle, inspired by the United States’ National Seal. He was the Chief Engraver for the US Mint when he created this design for use on American Silver Eagles in 1986. Moreover, this side also features the ‘S’ mint mark from the San Francisco Mint, intimating the coin’s source of mintage.
