The Griffin is a mythical beast – as a unique, regal creature, with half the body of a lion, and the head and wings of an eagle. It represents courage, strength, vigilance, swiftness, and a keen eye for detail – making it one of the most multi-faceted beasts among the ten that stood guard during the Queen’s coronation.

Each of these coins contains 10 troy ounces of 0.9999 pure silver. Moreover, these coins are assigned legal tender status in the United Kingdom, and they bear face values of £10 (GBP) as well.

This particular coin’s reverse design is the handiwork of Royal Mint Coin Designer – Jody Clark. He successfully captures the unique characteristics of the griffin, which has its talons resting on a shield. In fact, he adds a touch of brilliance to the design with a detailed image on the shield. The image depicts the Round Tower of Windsor Castle – birthplace of Edward III – the King who went on to adopt the griffin as the beast for his private sigil.
