The Design

The obverse features a recent Jody Clark depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s effigy dates back to 2015, and the information that encircles the image corresponds to the coin’s face value of “2 POUNDS”, “ELIZABETH II,” and the letters “D G REG F D,” which stands for “By the Grace of God, Queen” in Latin.

The reverse showcases Britannia, the feminine personification of the nation. In the image, she stands against the wind, carrying the Union Jack Shield and her trident as a symbol of resistance. Around her, the inscriptions read “BRITANNIA”, the year of issuance, “ 1 oz,” “‘999 FINE SILVER.”

The Mintage

The Britannia Series debuted in 1987 with the 1 oz Gold Britannia Coin and the fractional sizes that followed suit. 

The British Royal Mint only included the Silver Britannia in the collection in 1997 with .958 silver content, which became .999 fine silver in 2013.

2022 celebrated the 25th anniversary of the coin’s annual strikes in the bullion market as a sign of investors' and collectors’ appreciation for the coin’s elegant design and high levels of silver content.
