The Design

The obverse features the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The image is a creation of Jody Clark and dates back to 2015. Her Majesty is represented in her right-profile bust wearing the glorious George IV State Diadem Crown. Around the image, the inscriptions read “5 POUNDS” for the denomination, “ELIZABETH II” and “D. G. REG. F. D.” standing for “By the grace of God, Queen” in Latin.

The reverse showcases the yale of Beaufort, a mythic creature that symbolizes strong defense. In a challenging historical context, Henri VIII’s choice aimed to show his protection over his new wife. 

Engraved on the outer rim are the words: “YALE OF BEAUFORT,” “2 oz,” “FINE SILVER,” and “999.9” and the year of mintage.

The Tudor Beast Series

The inspiration for the motif came from the heraldic beasts sculpted on stones and settled lined up along the Moat’s Bridge in the Hampton Court Palace. They honor the union between Henri VIII, the second Tudor to become a king, and his new wife, Jane Seymour. 

The Tudor Beast Series aims to imprint the ten beasts sculped. Besides the Yale of Beaufort that stamps the 2023 edition and the 2022 Lion of England, the series will bring The Seymour Panther, the Bull of Clarence, the Tudor Dragon, the Greyhound of Richmond, the Royal Dragon, the Seymour Unicorn, the Queen's Panther, and the Queen’s Lion in silver, gold and platinum coins.
