The Design

The Notes feature exclusive designs only on the obverse side. Their reverse side is blank.

It is standard for all Golback Notes design to showcase a feminine figure representing a cardinal virtue. The virtues and their depiction vary according to the state series.

Audentia represents boldness and courage. Based on it, the feminine depiction of this virtue is a rodeo queen accompanied by her horse. Roses and thorns are spread over the image among ropes and other rodeo objects to show the contrasting ideas of beauty and danger from courageous attitudes.

The “5” denomination lies on the top left, beside the note’s origin. On the bottom, read the metal content description and “Doubt Not, Fear Not.”

Goldback Notes

Goldback notes have no dollar legal tender. But as they are made from .999 pure gold paint covered by two polyester layers applied to a plastic film, they are valued as a bullion item. 

Despite being a type of local currency, Goldback Notes are accepted as a form of payment only in Utah, Nevada, New Hampshire, and Wyoming.

Their shape reproduces regular currency notes, with sizes ranging from 1/1000th oz to 1/20th oz, according to their denominations, which can vary from 1 to 50 and proportionally to their amounts of gold.
